Workshops

Come join a workshop at the Children’s Science Center Lab!  We offer a variety of sessions on various STEM topics so check back often to see what is planned. Here are our current and upcoming workshops:

Workshop Participant Benefits: Workshop participants and one parent/caregiver are invited to explore the Children’s Science Center Lab after their session. Additional family members may purchase their General Admission ticket at the door or in advance. Children must be accompanied by an adult while enjoying the Lab exhibit areas.

Sewing Circuits

Experiment with a battery, conductive thread, conductive tape, and an LED light to learn how to connect a circuit, and design a unique, artistically crafted item, such as a pillow, a stuffed bear, or even a superhero’s shield! Tools such as pliers, scissors, and sewing needles will help to affix the necessary components together, and a metal snap will connect the circuit in order to light up your creation!

Science Magic!

Be amazed by feats of hydro-magic steeped in science! This hands-on family workshop is full of activities and experiments dedicated to water, color mixing, and superabsorbent polymers. Make water disappear, engineer a leak-proof cup, make ice cubes vanish, and experiment with test tube rainbows! “Science Magic!” provides budding scientists with scientific explanations for outcomes that seem as mystifying as magic.

Little Chemists II – Exploring Reactions

During our premier “Little Chemists” workshops, our budding scientists explored the results of mixing things together. In this corresponding experience, we’ll experiment with different reactions that result from mixing things together. If you missed the first “Little Chemists” workshop, no worries-there’s more to be discovered in “Little Chemists II”.

DIY 3D Story Design!

Combine science and art with exciting results! Bring your creative side and discover how to make your very own 3D images. Create a 3D book to take home and share with your family and friends. Explore how the brain analyzes images, and learn about stereoscopic vision. Each paid participant will be provided with all the materials needed to make their own 3D storybook, including 3D glasses to keep.

JUNE

Fragrant as a Flower

How do we smell different scents? What do our noses have to do with how things taste? Where do smells and tastes come from? Our June Family Workshop opens with Lawrence F. Lowery’s vibrantly illustrated book, Fragrant as a Flower, and includes hands-on sensory experiences that help children and their grown-ups learn about our sense of smell. Children will make herb and spice sensory play dough, plant an herb garden, create a lavender blossom salt painting, and take home each of their creations!

Hydro-Science!

Immerse yourself in Hydro-Science! Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop designed specifically for budding scientists to explore the nature of water. Children will use science processes to investigate volume, water displacement, and buoyancy. Together, budding scientists will crack the mystery behind unsinkable objects!
